Who is eligible for an advancement student loan?
Aufstiegs-Bafög can be granted to anyone who is continuing their education at a technical school or with a course. This is especially true for people who acquire one of the following advanced training qualifications:
In total, however, there are more than 700 comparable qualifications recognized as advanced training. This is funding under the Advancement Training Funding Act (AFBG). In contrast to the funding under the Federal Training Assistance Act (Bafög), you receive the advancement Bafög regardless of age.
Authorized groups of people in detail
High school graduates and dropouts without a completed training but who have the necessary professional experience for further training are also eligible for funding. University graduates who have completed a bachelor’s degree can also receive the advancement student loan. Higher degrees such as master’s degree, state examination or doctorate are excluded, as are pupils and students in their first training.
There are special requirements for foreigners: You are entitled to a student loan as long as your permanent place of residence is in Germany. In addition, they must be able to prove a permanent residence permit or a corresponding residence permit and have legally lived and worked here for 15 months.
How much advancement student loan do you get?
The Aufstiegs-Bafög is divided into two types of funding: First, you receive grants amounting to 50 percent of the course and examination fees, which you do not have to repay. On the other hand, you have the opportunity to get a low-interest loan from the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW). Eligible persons can receive up to 15,000 euros, half of which is a grant and half a loan.
Whoever has to make a masterpiece can also receive a maximum of 2,000 euros for material costs. 50 percent of this is a grant. The exact amount of the ascent Bafög, more precisely: the subsidy, depends on your income or assets. Here is an overview of the (maximum) funding:

Those who complete advanced training full-time can also receive support for their livelihood regardless of income or wealth. - 892 euros for single people
- 235 euros as a surcharge for married people
- 235 euros as a surcharge per child
- 150 euros flat rate for childcare costs for single parents

What is advancement student loan?
Aufstiegs-Bafög (formerly: Meister-Bafög) is state support. Can I apply for the advancement student loan a second time?
It is possible to apply for a second advanced student loan, but a second advanced training will only be accepted in exceptional cases. How much do you have to pay back with the advancement student loan?
The exact amount depends on what funds you have received. You will receive the subsidies and livelihood as a gift from the state. All you have to do is repay the loan from the KfW Bank. The repayment installments are at least 128 euros per month.
It looks different if you don’t do it regularly participated in the advanced training course or even canceled it: In this case, you have to repay the funding. However, this does not apply to short-term sick leave. The money is only to be paid back if more than 30 percent of the lessons are absent.
What requirements does the advanced training have to meet?
You will receive advancement student loans for further training examinations under public law or for attending technical schools. The condition is that the qualification you are aiming for counts higher than a vocational college qualification, a skilled worker, journeyman or assistant exam. In addition, the following criteria must be met:
- Minimum duration
The preparatory course comprises at least 400 teaching hours.
- Full time
Full-time courses must have 25 lessons per week and take place on four working days. Overall, the measure may not last longer than three years.
- Part time
Part-time courses may not last longer than four years and must include at least 18 teaching hours per month.
- Distance learning
Ascent Bafög for distance learning courses is possible, provided that they meet the requirements of the AFBG. In addition, they must meet the requirements of the Distance Learning Protection Act.
- Media-based courses
Media-based courses should include face-to-face tuition or similar mandatory media-based communication of at least 400 hours. Also required: Regular success checks – you will not receive an advancement student loan for pure self-study phases.
The payment of the Aufstiegs-Bafög is linked to regular attendance, which you must prove using Form F.
By when do you have to apply for a student loan?
You should apply for the Aufstiegs-Bafög as early as possible: As always with financial support from the state, you must provide appropriate evidence and processing the application takes time. In addition, funding is granted from the month of application at the earliest: If the training measure has already started a month before, you are giving away money. You must apply for the contribution, which includes the course and examination fees, at the latest at the end of the advanced training.

The contact persons are different depending on the federal state: For North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), the district government in Cologne takes on the advice and acceptance of applications. When do I have to repay my student loans?
The repayment begins after your training at the earliest and can be postponed up to a waiting period of six years. In addition, no further interest accrues during this period. After that, you have to repay the advancement student loan within ten years. But even then, there are still exceptional situations that the state takes into account: For example, if your income is below certain limits.
Then there is an exemption from repayment possible for up to five years. There are also special conditions if you have a low income, look after children under the age of 14 or care for close relatives. The situation is different if, on the other hand, you miss more than 30 percent of the lessons or abandon the advanced training. In that case, you will also have to repay the grants. It is therefore important that you report this immediately in the event of non-culpable failures due to illness or the like and have yourself certified by means of a medical certificate.
